Deep in the western lands, a demoness ran across the plain, her long back hair had been done in a braid rustled in the wind. She wore a white kimono with a red one underneath matching her red hakama paints. Her black shoes where only a blur as she ran. She was not unarmed, fore a sword was slung on her back and held powers that not many knew of. She seemed alert and was causes of things around her.
Scanning the surrounding area for only a quick moment, Kardowin didn't seem in the brightest mood as of late. She felt as if she had been caged. for some of the resent events had made her feel as such. With Tatsaya getting in a bind with Naraku had made her a target. She could only pray that it would not end up with a tragedy. Tatsaya had seemed comforted that she didn't roam very far, but it probably would drive her crazy if things didn't change for the good. Plus on top of that she worried about Aiko and Malko constantly. Not hearing from the two in months had aroused her suspicion that something had happened to them.

The dark oppression of the dead trees that wilted over the dry forest floor made for quite a gloomy place for such a typically-cheerful girl to be plowing through. Her clothes, which had been made for a boy were tied to her scrawny body with copious amounts of string, and her ever-growing feet flapped against the ground like dirty white fish. Her clogs were tied to her sash with even more string, banging against her barely-defined hip next to a cloth-wrapped dagger. Her breath puffed out from between her pink lips, billowing back over her flushed cheeks. As she blinked, dark lashes fluttered shut over her big brown eyes, and her mangled hair bounced on her head.
Aiko reveled in the feeling of her skinny legs pumping over the uneven ground, no matter how many times she stumbled and clumsily threw out her arms to catch herself in case she should fall. It felt like forever since she’d last run around like this. She ran her tongue over cracking lips, wetting them, and called in a breathy child’s voice, “Malko-chan! Are you still there?” She hoped he was. If he was, he could lead her back to Kardowin-sama. They were close this time, Aiko could just feel it!
Though, truth be told, she’d been feeling it for the past week.

A giant white wolf with crimson markings and a fire disk on his back, ran besides Aiko matching her speed. He was ready to give his aid if there was any trouble. To the girl he was no more than a big dog who fallowed her where ever she went. He gave a bark just to let her know he had not left her. He was not really sure what she was up to. But Malko had convidence that she knew what she was doing.

A smile flitted across Aiko’s youthful features when the girl heard the bark of her canine guardian. Sometimes, she had to call out, just to satisfy herself, but always Malko-chan would reply in his canine way. He was a very loyal friend and guardian to her. But she couldn’t hold her smile for long, because she had to concentrate on pumping her slender legs over the dark ground. She felt both that she must be going very fast and that she wasn’t going nearly fast enough; she moved as quickly as she could, but she was tiring quickly, and her fastest pace was slow in comparison with most. She only held up another minute of alternating stumbling and trotting before her chest ached with every breath, her feet felt like heavy stones on the ends of her legs, and a sharp pain seared through her side as her muscles cramped. The girl came to a stumbling halt, doubled over and panting, and she glanced up again, looking for her ever-faithful Malko-chan.
“You know, Malko-chan?” she said when she regained her breath. “Maybe I don’t really know where Kardowin-sama is, after all. But I must get back to her!” Aiko stood with a wobble, then leaned against the nearest tree trunk, still gasping like a grounded fish. “Why must I get sick?” she inquired of her canine friend, but knew he couldn’t explain why.

Malko stood near the tired girl. He had just realized what she was doing, trying to get back to Kardowin. Of course she was near but want close enough to realize they where there a few miles away. Aiko had pushed her self to the limit and could hardly stand, from what he seen. He laid down so Aiko could be able to ride him, then nudged her with his nose knowing she would understand.

Aiko was glad for the support of the tree against her shoulder. The ancient guardian of the forest had long passed away into the void, but the young teen placed a grateful hand on the lifeless trunk, wishing the tree’s spirit good luck in the afterlife. The girl’s frantic breathing slowed, and she wondered for a moment if, had she died in her most recent sickness, she might have met this particular tree’s soul in that place where the souls go. But then in what position would she have left her poor guardian, Malko-chan, separated as they had been from Kardowin-sama?
On the subject of Malko-chan, Aiko felt something cool and wet nudge her, and she glanced over to see her dog guardian laying down, looking at her with his intelligent eyes. Knowing what he meant for her to do, the girl smiled and murmured, “As always, thank you very much, Malko-chan.” Leaving the tree, she walked, mostly steady, to his back and swung a leg over his spine. Thankfully she was small enough to situate herself behind his shoulders easily, though she could only hope she didn’t cause her guardian much discomfort when she rode him. After patting his furry shoulder, Aiko leaned forward to speak in the dog’s ear. “If I hold on too tightly, or if I hurt you in any way, just stop and I’ll get off.” She was well enough to walk, just not to go racing through the forest. Straightening a bit, she grabbed tufts of Malko-chan’s fur and gripped with her knees and ankles.

Malko looked back at the girl, making sure she had a firm hold of his fur, then with a sudden jolt he started his run towards the direction he sensed Kardowin. He was now running about four times faster than any human could ever run. He easily made his way through the forest. He paws hardly touched the ground as he glided the rest of the way. Almost that instance he slowed to a stop upon exiting the forest. He and Aiko now faced a plain that was as dead as the forest had been. Scanning the horizon he looked any hint that would give away Kardowin's position.

Aiko met Malko-chan’s gaze for a moment, but then the great dog nearly shot out from under her as he bounded forward, his powerful legs driving him and his rider forward at incredible speeds. A squeak of surprise escaped from the human girl as she quickly tightened her grip with her legs, pressing her knees hard as she dared into her canine mount’s flanks. The wind whipped at her tangled hair and peeled past her head, cold against her sensitive skin, so she buried her face in the soft white pillow that was Malko’s fur. Her elbows pressed into the dog’s neck as she tried to grip on with every part of her body, for with each twitch of his muscle, she felt her own body being bounced along, though shortly after the tooth-jarring part of the ride, Malko-chan’s gait smoothed into a gliding pace, and Aiko dared to lift her head from his ruff.
As he slowed to a stop, she saw the trees thin and, quite suddenly, it seemed, they were on the edge of a lifeless plain. Aiko’s light eyes alighted on a vast stretch of dead earth, and for some reason, it made her feel very sad inside to see it like this. Even the dead forest had not struck her as so… empty. Devoid of anything and everything. It didn’t sit well in the girl’s stomach, so she put her face back in Malko-chan’s fur.

With in a moment, Kardowin picked up several familiar scents, one of a human and the other was a demon wolf. Instantly Kardowin skidded to a stop looking in the direction that the scent came from. '... could it be Aiko and Malko? What could they be doing this far west?' Once again Kardowin started running but this time it was in the direction of scents. And she ran at a far slower pace this time.
Malko baked once he spotted her, alerting Aiko that Kardowin was coming their way. His tail wagged as fast as he could allow it to go.

At Malko-chan’s barking, Aiko peered up, blinking the soft white fuzz from her eyes. The girl could feel the big dog’s spine moving beneath her as he wagged his tail, but she couldn’t understand why her canine companion seemed so happy. The land around them was so desolate and unhappy! Her eyes, weaker than those of the magic dog, squinted as she scanned the bleak horizon, looking for a sign, a signal, a form of hope that would keep such a lifeless place from sending Aiko into despair at the sight of it all!
She began to shake her head as her hopes, which had peeked up to see if there was anything she could be happy about here, sunk back down inside her heart. And then her narrowed eyes flew wide, lids peeling back with a gasp. Releasing Malko’s fur, Aiko rubbed an eye with the back of one hand. Was her sight deceiving her? Was this one of those… those meer-ages? No! The figure was still approaching them from its place across the desolate plain, and as it drew nearer, the orphan girl gave a laugh. Swinging her short legs over Malko’s flank, she slid all the way to the ground. Even though she landed on her bum, she scrambled back to her feet in a tangle of arms, legs, and clothes, and began pounding across the dead prairie.
[pink]“Kardowin-sama!”[/pink] she called as she ran, her earlier fatigue brushed away in her excitement. [pink]“Kardowin-sama, is that you?”[/pink]

Malko happily followed Aiko closely behind, all the well making sure that the girl wasn't going fall flat on her face or such.
At first Kardowin had thought this was probably some sort of trap but hearing the little girls familiar voice confirmed the fact that this was Aiko and Malko. As Aiko came nearer, as she forgot her current problems a smile grew on Kardowin's face. "I hope your journey has gone good for you."

Aiko reached her demon master, panting softly. She stared up at the older woman with open wonderment glittering in her wide brown eyes. [pink]“It is you, Kardowin-sama,”[/pink] the girl breathed, and her small smile widened. She laughed again and dipped at the waist in a bow. [pink]“Oh, it’s so good to see you again, my lady!”[/pink] Aiko straightened, grin dancing on her petite features.
When her old master spoke, Aiko’s open-mouthed grin faltered, and her lips closed in an apologetic smile. [pink]“I’m sorry, my lady, but no,”[/pink] she admitted. [pink]“I got really, really sick. Otherwise, I’d have stayed with you. Oh!”[/pink] Here, the girl’s large eyes sparkled with happiness at the memory. [pink]“But there was a very, very nice old lady who gave me herbs and allowed me to rest in her house in a village. Malko-chan never left me, though.”[/pink] At the mention of the great dog, Aiko turned, afraid she’d left him behind, but relief crossed her features as she saw him right behind her.
Turning back to her master, the girl grinned again before remembering her manners. [pink]“And your journey, Kardowin-sama? How have you been?”[/pink]

"Well I didn't do anything too dangerous..." She started. Kardowin knew that she would have to choose her words carefully. She didn't relay want to make the little girl worry about her. She keeped an eye on the girl face before speaking again. " I managed to get my fortress back." she hoped that this bit of news would excite Aiko.

[pink]“Oh!”[/pink] gasped Aiko, her eyes bright as stars and wide as moons. [pink]“That’s wonderful, Kardowin-sama!”[/pink] she gushed happily. Though she didn’t actually understand very much about it, she vaguely knew that her demon master had… well, she thought she’d lost her home or a key or something of that ilk that kept her from going home. This seemed to mean, if Aiko understood correctly, that her lady had a home again. The girl’s heart swelled with happiness for the demon lady, showing in the orphan’s broad smile. She clasped her hands behind her back and swung from side to side, her eyes still upturned to the demoness. [pink]“So... does that mean you’re going to stay at the fortress from now on?”[/pink]

"I might, but then again I can't stay cooped up in there, can I now.'' Kardowin smiled lightly at the girl. Even though her face did not show it, she was uncertain how thing where going along. With Aiko coming along you could say she saved kardowin from a slow insanity that had been creeping up on her.
